Articles of incorporation, financial records, building maintenance records, membership lists, statements of faith, annual reports, and newsletters, of the Middlebury Congregational Church; materials relating to the celebration of the church's bicentennial (1991) including ms. of a published history of the church by Stephen A. Freeman. The early records are of two organizations: the Congregational Church of Middlebury (originally the Church of Christ in Middlebury), which was concerned with matters of faith and membership; and the Religious Congregational Society (originally the Society of the Church of Christ in Middlebury), which handled the church's property and finances. These merged in 1964, becoming the Congregational Church of Middlebury, Vt., whose monthly newsletters and annual reports continue to be collected. Includes records (1795-1805) of the Center Library of Middlebury.

Stephen A. Freeman was born in Cambridge, Mass. He served as a naval aviator during World War I, graduated from Harvard in 1920 and received his Ph. D. there in 1923. He was appointed professor of French and dean of the French School at Middlebury College in 1925, serving on the faculty and in various administrative positions until his retirement in 1973.
